I write about freedom, civic life, culture and human flourishing.

My work has taken me through civil society, non-formal education and cultural programming, where I’ve spent years thinking about how people learn, participate, disagree and live together.

This blog is where I follow those questions further through essays, observations, books, art, cities, politics and whatever else helps me make sense of being human in a free society.

I’m particularly interested in civic education: not simply teaching people how democracy works, but asking what it takes to develop the capacities, habits and imagination needed to live in one.
